What is the ImagiNations Competition?

ImagiNations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) in order to promote diversity. The competition enables participants to showcase their talents and gain practical knowledge in design, with the opportunity to win an all-expense-paid trip to WDI in California, monetary awards and be considered for internship opportunities.

What is an Imagineer?

The name Imagineering combines imagination with engineering to describe both what we do and who we are. Building upon the legacy of Walt Disney, Imagineers create immersive entertainment experiences, primarily for our Disney theme parks and resorts. Every day, Imagineers bring art and science together to turn fantasy into reality and dreams into magic.

What disciplines work at Imagineering?

More than 140 disciplines exist at Imagineering including: artists, architects, engineers, writers, machinists, landscape designers, model makers, sound technicians, carpenters, producers, accountants, filmmakers, schedulers, estimators and more.

Are there internships available through this competition?

Yes, all qualified participants will be considered for paid internship opportunities at Imagineering and other Walt Disney Company business units. We plan on awarding eight internships to ImagiNations qualified applicants, but the final number may be higher or lower based on project needs.

Can I be considered for internship opportunities, even if my team’s project is not selected as finalist?

Yes, while all finalists will be offered the opportunity to interview for internships during their visit to Walt Disney Imagineering, all other qualified participants may also be considered for available paid internship opportunities within Imagineering, as well as other Walt Disney Company business units.

When and where do the internships take place?

Internships often take place during the summer in Glendale, CA; Anaheim, CA and Orlando, FL. However, depending on our project needs, we place interns during other times of the year.

What do interns work on?

As an intern, you will gain valuable hands-on experience working directly on a project and alongside Imagineers. In addition, our internship program incorporates other experiences such as development opportunities, and informative sessions with Imagineers.

How long does an internship last?

The length of an internship is based on project needs, but typically lasts for a period of three months.

Does it cost me anything to enter?

There is no cost to enter the competition.

We feel that our art skills are not good enough; can we have someone else create our model, images, or other props for our entry?

No, all submitted ideas, materials and media must be original and be the product of the team members.

Do we have to submit college transcripts with our application?

With your application you must submit proof of current enrollment or recent graduation (within a year at the time of application) from a college or university in the United States. Proof of enrollment may be in the form of a college transcript or a letter from the university, and must include information regarding current enrollment, standing (junior, senior or full-time graduate) and major/minor.

Can I submit my design portfolio to further showcase my skills/ experience for greater consideration for an internship?

Yes, we suggest that you include a link to your online portfolio on your resume but you may also upload your portfolio to our careers website once you are qualified into the competition.

My friends and I attend different universities; can we still enter as a team?

Yes, you can still enter as a team. On the Entry Form, each team member must include their University/ Organization name and have their University, Association or Organization authorized representative sign on the appropriate fields.

We sent our application in, but we have not received anything yet. What can we do?

After you mail your complete application, please allow a week for us to process it. If you have not heard from us by then, you may email us at wdi.imaginations@disney.com.

With the submission being electronic, do we need to create any physical materials?

Although you are not asked to submit any physical materials, you may find that three dimensional materials will better convey your team’s idea. In that case you may use the image and video allowances in the project submission to show us what you developed. If selected as a finalist, we encourage you to bring those physical materials to the final competition.

When will we know if we are a finalist team?

Finalists will be notified by December 23, 2011.

If my team is selected as finalists, who is required to present at the final competition?

All members of the selected finalist teams are required to participate in the final competition; otherwise your team will be disqualified.

Will the application and submission deadlines for the 2013 competition be similar to this year?

The application and submission periods for the 2013 competition will likely take place in October and November 2012. The final competition will likely take place in January/February 2013.
